How One Man's Simple Vision Produced Some Of The Most Beautiful Cars Ever Made

$

ian callum

If you don’t spend your days thumbing through car magazines and religiously watching reruns of “Top Gear,” the name Ian Callum probably won’t ring a bell.

But if you have even a passing interest in cars, you’ll recognize his work. There’s the Aston Martin Vanquish that starred in the 2002 James Bond flick “Die Another Day” (and turned invisible in the movie).

There's also the DB7, which became one of the most popular Astons. Cult classics like the Ford Escort Cosworth and the Nissan R390 are part of Callum's oeuvre.

More recently, Callum has helped along the resurgence of Jaguar with a wave of beautiful sedans and the F-Type, the brand’s first true sports car since the legendary E-Type passed away in the 1970s.

Even the industry's harshest critics have found a soft spot for Callum's work. "I'm not saying the Aston Martin DB7 looks good for a car. For me, this is the most beautiful thing ever made by man,"gushed Jeremy Clarkson, the curmudgeonly host of the BBC’s “Top Gear.”

Callum has built a 35-year career around his seemingly effortless ability to bring simple and elegant designs to life. His work has staying power: More than two decades after the DB7's debut, the car's design DNA can be seen in Aston Martin's current product line.

The Dumfries, Scotland, native started his design career with Ford in 1979 after graduating with a master's in vehicle design from the Royal College of Art in London. For the next decade, Callum climbed Ford's corporate ladder, ascending to the position of design manager at the company’s Italian Ghia studio.

He left Ford in 1990 to join engineering consultancy TWR Designs as its general manager and chief designer. There, Callum worked on some of his most glamorous projects for clients like Aston Martin, Nissan, and Range Rover.

But his greatest achievement may be the turnaround he helped engineer at Jaguar after being appointed its director of design in 1999.ian callum jaguar f-type In the late '90s, the luxury carmaker was mired in an overly nostalgic design rut with such a heavy emphasis on retro-themed designs that it struggled to find a way forward. Callum immediately installed a new styling philosophy.

"There isn't a specific visual cue that makes a Jaguar," Callum told Business Insider. "If you look back at the history of the Jaguar, it’s an ever-changing [design] profile on the cars."

Jaguar cast off its rigid design theme for what Callum calls "a set of values" that allows for new styles while maintaining basic principles. These values include simple yet beautiful lines, a striking grill and headlight design used across the Jaguar lineup, and, most important, an eye-catching profile that would make any passersby look twice.pierce brosnan aston martin vanquishWithin the auto industry, Callum’s work is well recognized, earning him awards from Auto Express, Top Gear magazine, and the British Royal Society of Arts.

But Callum himself is mostly unknown, even to many Jaguar and Aston Martin owners. Though he feels that car designers deserve more recognition and social standing in the artistic world, he is content with his level of anonymity.

"I have two pleasures in designing a car," Callum said. "One is the creation of the design itself, when you take a look back and enjoy the design with your team, and two is when the public gets a kick out of the design."

Fortunately for Callum and Jaguar, that public reaction has translated into business success. Jaguar sales jumped 19% in the first quarter of 2014, and the F-Type convertible and coupe have been piling up rave reviews.

And there's no reason Jaguar's new philosophy won't keep producing hits. "That can take us anywhere as we move forward — we can change the details,” Callum said. “As long as the values of beauty, simplicity, and a sense of visual power remain, then it'll be a Jaguar."

BMW Explains Why Its New Electric Car Looks So Strange

2014 bmw i3

The 2014 World Car Awards were presented at the New York Auto Show this morning, and BMW's all-electric i3 came away as the star, winning World Green Car and World Car Design of the Year.

The latter is somewhat surprising (or maybe not), given the i3's totally unconventional looks: It's nothing like the cars that made BMW one of the world's premiere automakers.

But even before the award was announced, BMW defended the bold look.

"The design ... can be polarizing to people," head of EV Operations and Strategy for BMW North America Jacob Harb said in an interview at the auto show. But there are two reasons it looks the way it does: It's made for electric driving in a city, and it's meant to bring new customers into the brand.

"The concept was designed in the beginning to be a megacity vehicle," Ludwig Willisch, President and CEO of BMW North America, told Business Insider. It seats four people but is small enough to zip through tight traffic and roads, which explains its proportions.

BMW designers could surely have made a car that fit that mandate without looking so unusual, or converted an existing model to run on electricity, but that wasn't the mission. The i3 is made to appeal to a new set of customers, Willisch said.

"What we know from research is that people that drive a car like that want to make a statement, they want to show that they choose a different way of mobility. It’s not the ordinary steel car with an exhaust pipe.”

bmw i3 electric car

Harb presented the "polarizing" design as a good thing. "The whole point of a new model is conquest and to bring new people into the brand," he said. "With i, we know we're doing that."

Here's how the World Car Awards explained the decision to give the design trophy to BMW:

Unlike other BMW cars, the i3 has a boxy shape, which suggests roominess and efficiency. But it still retains BMW’s typical dynamism thanks to the larger diameter wheels and the very short overhangs both on front and rear. Besides that, the i3 expresses the sub-brand’s own character with using unique design features, including the black bonnet and the side window graphics that goes through the rear pillar. The interior is more surprising and attractive. It marks radical leap of car interior design, and it spreads as calm yet rich feeling as a modern living room.

World Car Awards winners are selected by a jury of 69 automotive journalists, based on recommendations from panels of experts in each category. The Audi A3 was named World Car of the Year.

fisker motorcycle viking concept

Henrik Fisker, the founder of recently bankrupt electric car venture Fisker Automotive, is back in the public eye with his first motorcycle design.

Fisker made his name as a designer, creating worship-worthy cars like the BMW Z8 and Aston Martin DB9. The Karma Fisker, while riddled with reliability issues, is undeniably gorgeous.

Fisker Automotive never got off the ground, despite a government loan, and went bankrupt in November 2013.

The new motorcycle, dubbed the Viking Concept, is made for Lauge Jensen, the motorcycle company acquired in 2012 by Anders Kirk Johansen, the Danish businessman whose grandfather, Ole Kirk Christiansen, invented LEGO toys.

The 660-pound motorcycle's engine, built in Wisconsin, delivers 100 horsepower and will send it up to 130 mph and get 30 miles per gallon.

F15 Mach Loop Gif

Almost every day, villagers in Western Wales feel their homes tremble as waves of fighter jets rumble overhead.

Fortunately, the residents aren't experiencing the beginning of World War III, but of planes flying the Mach Loop.

The Mach Loop, short for Machynlleth Loop, is a series of valleys used by the Royal Air Force and the U.S. Air Force to train pilots how to fly low and fast.

As part of the British Ministry of Defense's Tactical Training Low Flying Area, small jet fighters are permitted to fly as low as 100 feet off the ground, while larger bomber or cargo aircraft may fly as low as 150 feet.

The hills surrounding the Mach Loop afford spectators the opportunity to view a procession of air force F-15s, Tornadoes, and Typhoons streak by at eye level. The spectacular sights have turned these sleepy hills into a mecca for aviation photographers.

Take a look at this stunning video from last month, complete with air traffic control directions:

The Incredible Isolation Of North Korea — In One Map

marine traffic north korea shipping

North Korea is often referred to as "The Hermit Kingdom" in the west — and one map demonstrates why.

The website MarineTraffic displays live data of cargo ships over 299 gross tonnage, and while South Korean ports of Incheon, Busan, and Ulsan are bustling with activity, shipboard cargo movement in the North barely registers, despite the country having eight major seaports.

City AM notes:

Perhaps looking at volumes of shipping to each of the Koreas is an unfair comparator, as North Korea is able to take greater advantage of rail links to the continent, but neighboring China itself is a hive of cargo ship activity. The port of Dandong, close to the China-North Korea border is itself incredibly popular.

The North does trade with a limited number of countries with about $3.9 billion in exports. But that's nothing compared to South Korea's $557 billion, Japan's $697 billion, or China's $2.2 trillion.

It's just another striking difference between South Korea and North Korea, a country without widespread electricity usage seen as virtually dark from space.

NOW: Even more isolated are North Korea's horrifying prison camps

SpaceX Makes Its Second Attempt To Launch Dragon Spacecraft

dragon capsule

SpaceX will make its second attempt on Friday, April 18, to send the Dragon spacecraft on a Falcon 9 rocket to the International Space Station on its third resupply mission.

The launch is scheduled for 3:25 p.m. EDT and will be broadcast live from the SpaceX website starting at 2:45 p.m. You can watch here. A livestream is also embedded below.

Monday's launch was postponed due a helium leak on the Falcon 9 rocket's first stage.

"We have brought the vehicle back to horizontal and are replacing the faulty valve, as well as inspecting the whole system for anything that may have contributed to the valve not working as designed," SpaceX said in a status update on Thursday.

The Dragon spacecraft will carry more than 4,000 pounds of supplies and equipment to the space station on the third of its 12 resupply missions required in their $1.6 billion contract with NASA.

SpacexThis launch is particularly exciting because it's the first time Falcon 9's first stage is equipped with four "landing legs," which are part of a test to see if the rocket can be recovered and reused.

If all goes correctly, Falcon 9 rocket's first stage will separate during launch and perform a re-entry engine burn to make sure it isn't destroyed when it falls back to Earth.

The legs should pop out as the rocket is performing its landing maneuvers above the ocean's surface. The legs won't support it in the water so it will fall over and be recovered by the SpaceX team. The company hopes to eventually land the first stage on the ground.

SpaceX previously said that the chances of this procedure working correctly and resulting in the first stage actually being recovered are low, placing at the odds of success at between 30% and 40%.

"The entire recovery of the first stage is entirely experimental," SpaceX vice president of mission assurance Hans Koenigsmann told Space.com. "We've been doing improvements to the recovery of the first stage in little steps, being very careful it doesn't affect the performance of Dragon."

A reusable rocket is part of SpaceX founder's Elon Musk's grand plan to make the future of commercial travel much cheaper, since the cost of fuel is much less compared to the cost of building a rocket from scratch every time.

This isn't the only rocket they want to be able to launch and land vertically. They've also been working on a "grasshopper" project, seen in the video below, which can take off, fly up and over, and land back on the ground in the same spot.

Check it out, from the SpaceX YouTube Channel:

Cadillac Doesn't Mind That Lots Of People Hate Its Electric Car Commercial

cadillac elr poolside commercial

Cadillac has been lampooned by Ford and criticized by others for "Poolside," the 2014 ad for its electric-hybrid ELR that praises rich Americans who work constantly and enjoy material benefits such as "the upside of only taking two weeks off in August."

Uwe Ellinghaus, Cadillac's marketing chief, says he expected this kind of reaction.

"We are not daft," he said in an interview at the New York Auto Show this week.

"We knew beforehand that we would break through the clutter, that we would capture a lot of attention, and we did,"Ellinghaus said. "We knew that this TVC [television commercial] had a point of view that not everybody would agree with."

Ellinghaus said he was caught off guard, however, by "the cultural warfare" sparked by "Poolside"— heated debates over the merits of a workaholic culture. The Huffington Post called it "classist and greedy." Slate deemed it "condescending." USA Today asked if it was generating "rich-guy backlash."

"I think this is almost unavoidable consequence if you have a strong message out that people either love it or hate it," Ellinghaus told Business Insider, noting that the ad "had a point of view that we are American, this is a good thing, we are different."

But he didn't expect people to take it so seriously. "What I struggle with personally as an outsider and not being an American is I found far more twinkle in the eye in it," he explained. "Where's the humor, the irony? That got completely lost."

As for Ford's widely lauded parody of "Poolside," an ad for the Focus C-Max Energi that
says making the world better is "the upside of giving a damn," Ellinghaus calls it "terrific."

"Copying is the sincerest form of flattering."

Here's "Poolside."

And Ford's parody.

The $100,000 Aston Martin Vantage Signals The End Of An Era

Aston Martin V8 Vantage GT Interior stick shift manual

Automakers are slowly but surely pushing the traditional manual transmission toward obsolescence, and that's bad news for drivers who prize the skill and control of a manual gearshift.

The case against manuals is strong. Auto technology has become so advanced that computers can control cars better than most humans.

Automatic transmissions have wider appeal because they're easier to use. Developing only one system saves money, especially for high-end cars with lower production numbers.

Ferrari and Lamborghini have decisively moved away from stick shifts, and now Aston Martin has joined the movement.

However, all is not lost for those who want to feel like James Bond and a master driver. One high performance Aston remains available with the tried and true manual shifter.

Just a year or two ago, virtually every vehicle in the Aston Martin lineup was offered with a manual transmission. Now, only the V8 Vantage GT remains.

Unveiled at the New York Auto Show, the V8 is the most racetrack-ready model in the Aston lineup. The company's venerable 430hp 4.7 litre V8 engine will push the car all the way up to 190 mph and from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds.

With a traditional 6-speed manual transmission, the V8 Vantage GT will feel much more like the legendary Aston Martin sports cars of the past than any other model out there.

Even better, it's the rare Aston that will start for less than $100,000 ($99,900, to be precise). The V8 will hit American shores in the third quarter of this year.

Here's a closer look at Aston Martin's last manual hurrah:

British Airways Wants To Fuel Its Planes With Garbage

British Airways is teaming up with Washington D.C-based Solena Fuels to spin garbage into jet fuel in a project called "GreenSky" (via Jalopnik).

Solena is using something called plasma gasification to convert 551,000 tons of waste into gas. It will then use a chemical conversion to convert the gas into 16 million gallons of jet fuel annually, according to British Airways.

"The construction of the GreenSky London fuel facility at Thames Enterprise Park will lay the foundations for British Airways to reduce its carbon emissions significantly," said Willie Walsh, CEO of British Airways parent company IAG. "The sustainable jet fuel produced each year will be enough to power our flights from London City Airport twice over with carbon savings the equivalent of taking 150,000 cars off the road."

The facility is slated for completion in 2017.

Airlines have been struggling with the high cost of jet fuel, which now makes up 30-40% of their budgets. Air New Zealand, Lufthansa, and Virgin Atlantic have all been experimenting with algae-based fuels.

Anthony Weiner: Here's How The Taxi Industry Can Save Itself From Uber

$
0
0

Weiner! Header

There's a fierce fight between ridesharing app startups and the taxi companies currently raging around the country and I think I know a way to make peace, let both sides walk away with a win, and most importantly, give the riding public the best of all worlds.

This taxi tiff reminds me of the fights over Napster and other music download services that I had a front row seat for during my time in Congress. Back then, Steve Jobs was the one who managed to bridge the gap between the startup upstarts and the record labels. Borrowing a page from his playbook could similarly lead to a solution here.

Steve is no longer with us, but I think there’s someone else who can step up and play his role in this rideshare row—Rahm Emanuel. So, how does the Chicago mayor morph into the cab world’s answer to Steve Jobs? Allow me to explain.

In this case, Uber, Lyft, Hailo and Sidecar and others that let you hail cabs on a smartphone are like a modern version of the old filesharing  companies.  They are giving consumers something they want delivered in a format they want for a really sweet price. The discounts they offer might not be as cheap as a House of Pain song was on Limewire in 2001, but being able to get across Manhattan for $6 is pretty close. And just as Napster was illegal, it is pretty clear that the Ubers of the world are operating in a legal grey area in a lot of cities that have laid down clear legal markers about requirements for cars, drivers, insurance and other tools of the trade.

Up to now, sadly, the taxi medallion owners have responded to this challenge like the record companies did in the 2000’s - with bluster, outrage and their own lobbyists and lawyers. And like the record companies, they have run up a pretty impressive list of states, localities and courts that have heeded their demands that these upstarts stop.

However, I believe the taxi industry should lay down arms in the regulation wars. They should learn the lesson of the music industry and go into the e-hail business themselves.

While record companies were fighting a death battle to protect their business model of CDs sold at record stores, they missed a chance to adapt and become leaders in the a la carte cheap download world that Napster had created. It was Jobs with his iTunes platform who eventually showed the way for the music industry to make money in a world where MP3s were king. Jobs also showed that consumers would opt for a well-regulated and legal model even if the price point isn’t zero.

Cab companies have a chance to adopt a similar strategy. They should lose the obsession with requiring the ridesharing companies to comply with every single requirement that is imposed on medallion cabs.  The yellows may have good arguments for their positions, but if these startups want to have drivers with insufficient insurance or illegally use private cars for commercial purposes, leave it to the inevitable backlash to eventually get those minimum standards raised.

Rather than locking horns with the rideshare companies, the taxi industry should work on joining them in allowing customers to hail their cares with apps and smartphones. Would the taxis be able to compete if given similar tools? Maybe not in terms of price, but they have other advantages. The regulatory corner cutting of the ridesharing companies has no doubt already given many riders pause amid increasing stories of incidents in their cars including wild surge pricing, drivers using Facebook chat while on the go, and even alleged sexual harassment by unlicensed Uber drivers. The better trained, more experienced, and yes, more regulated drivers make a better option for the rider choosing based on quality and safety rather than simply the lowest price.

Some readers may recall my column last month where I criticized Tesla for not respecting existing regulations in its attempts to sell cars directly to consumers without using franchise dealers. So, why am I encouraging the taxi companies to adapt to a new model rather than fight to the finish to defend existing regulations? In Tesla’s case, they want rules changed in a way that could eliminate dealers, who lawmakers decided offer consumers added value by helping to enforce warranty agreements and spread competitive pricing. In this case, the taxi companies are the ones who have been targeted by the “disruptors. Just as with Tesla, I’m not suggesting taxi owners ignore laws or the courts, but they also shouldn’t ignore the innovations of their competitors.

Sadly, I don’t see the licensed cab companies adopting this approach. The battle lines are drawn too starkly and both the cab industry and its regulators seem perfectly happy with the status quo.  Medallion prices are at record levels and regulators are being leaned on pretty hard to, well, regulate.

I say sadly because I have friends in the taxi business.  They supported me in a big way when I was running for various offices and I have advised them for money from time to time since I left Congress. Although there are some true innovators in the yellow cab world, given how many lawsuits are pending around the country right now as part of this debate, I doubt I will keep many friends in the industry after this column. However, in spite of the seemingly entrenched opposition, I’m certain the industry is missing a big opportunity here.

This is where Steve Jobs and Rahm Emanuel come in.

It was Apple, a third party, who eventually figured out how to help the music business live with - and even love - the MP3. Just as Apple dragged the record labels into a profitable, digital future with iTunes and paved the way for other services like Rhapsody, Pandora and Spotify, I think it's going to need to be a third party that steps in and shows the taxi industry how to work with new technology rather than against it.

Someone is going to be the Steve Jobs of this Uber / Taxi battle and I think Emanuel’s the guy.

The grand bargain is there for the making and the Mayor of Chicago is probably smart enough to realize it.  (And I'm not just saying that because I have a soft spot for overbearing big city politicians with Clinton ties.)

The deal would look like this: leave the rideshares largely alone.  Maybe insist on some insurance minimum and some baseline requirements of the drivers and cars, but let them be.  Don't treat them like full-fledged taxis like most medallion owners are clamoring for. If these startups want to continue to subsidize fares or experiment with pricing models, more power to them.

But here's the Steve Jobs part. Cities should be the ones who create the taxi world's version of iTunes. Municipal governments can create and require a single city branded medallion taxi e-hail app.  Since the tracking technology is already a part of most big city cab fleets and most cities already require credit card readers, the technological backbone is already in the cars for cities to get into the rideshare app business.  Taxi's are essentially extensions of the mass transit in a city like so why shouldn't they create easy ways to access, track and pay for that infrastructure?

It also would be a boon to the city as it would let them collect travel data and help improve access to service in neighborhoods that have been underserved by encouraging drivers to make more far flung trips by giving them more confidence they could find return fares from places with less busy street traffic. Of course, an app could also be an excellent revenue source for a city who wants to sell advertising or use the tracking data and rider smartphone feedback to improve enforcement.

The rideshare companies benefit here too. Not only do they get to keep their cars on the road, but they could bid for the contracts to build and run the apps for the cities that have them. Of course, most importantly, consumers win here because they get to hail the entire universe of cabs from both medallion and startup fleets right on their phones.

There is nothing special about Chicago. This city branded taxi app could work in Boston, San Francisco, New York or really anywhere that has a regulated fleet. However, Chicago is currently examining the issue of rideshare regulations and no one could ever accuse Emanuel of lacking the elbows necessary to push through legislation over the objections of an entrenched interest. The question is whether Emanuel has the vision of a Jobs and is willing to make peace between the warring cab factions by giving the taxi world and all of us its version of iTunes.

A bomb threat discovered on a Delta Airlines plane led authorities to direct the plane to a remote section of Denver International Airport for further investigation, The Denver Channel reports.

During the flight, a flight attendant found a note in the rear galley indicating a bomb was on board, sources told Denver Channel.

Denver-bound Flight 1500 out of Detroit, Mich., had 151 passengers on board, Denver Post reports.

One passenger told the Post that everyone on board was taken away from the area, and were not allowed to retrieve any of their belongings.

Police officers brought in K-9 units to investigate, according to radio traffic picked up by The Denver Channel.

FBI spokesman Dave Joly later told Reuters the "majority" of passengers had been allowed to claim their baggage and leave. He did not give details of arrests, the credibility of the threat, or say if a bomb had even been located. An airport official however, only said the "event" had been "secured."

Iran Explains Why An American Plane Was Spotted At Tehran Airport

Tehran airport

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran says that a plane which landed in Tehran airport flying the American flag was leased to Ghana's presidential office and carrying a business delegation from the African nation.

The New York Times reported on Thursday that a plane owned by the Bank of Utah was parked in Mehrabad Airport in Tehran on Tuesday.

Its presence was noteworthy as the United States and Iran have been at loggerheads for decades and the Islamic Republic is subject to certain economic sanctions.

State news agency IRNA on Friday night quoted Iranian foreign ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham as saying that the plane was transporting the brother of Ghana's president and a mining delegation.

"The plane is on lease to Ghana's presidential office, and its passengers were Ghanaian senior officials led by the president's brother. None of its crew members were American," Afkham was quoted as saying.

The Ghanaian delegation was in Iran to follow up on agreements reached between the two countries two years ago, she said, adding that it departed on Thursday.

The New York Times said it had reviewed a confidential document which showed that "the plane is held in a trust by the Bank of Utah and on behalf of the mining company, Engineers and Planners, which is based in Accra".

It quoted a Bank of Utah executive, Brett King, as saying the company had no idea why the plane was at the airport and it was investigating further.

There was no immediate comment from Ghanian officials.

Iran and world powers are engaged in negotiations over Tehran's disputed nuclear program. Some international sanctions imposed over its program have been eased temporarily after a deal was reached last year. Washington has said the lifting of sanctions can only happen "in total" after a comprehensive deal is reached.

Former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad stepped up a to expand ties with African countries, though his campaign yielded little in terms of trade and votes at the United Nations against sanctions targeting its nuclear program.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) had a close call with a passing Amtrak train on Friday during a press conference dedicated to commuter rail safety.

As Blumenthal stood behind Milford Mayor Ben Blake while he spoke, he narrowly dodged an oncoming train himself — inadvertently demonstrating the importance of, you know, staying behind that yellow line.

Interestingly, Blake was saying "safety as you know, is paramount" right as the train zipped by.

Blumenthal has been bringing attention to safety violations from Metro-North, in the wake of two derailments in the last year, one of which left four passengers dead.

Here's a GIF of the incident, and the full video is below.

In 2008, BMW introduced the X6 and created a new kind of car, the sport utility coupe. An odd blend of high-riding SUV and sporty coupe, the X6 was a hit.

Now Mercedes-Benz is getting in on the action. Today at the Beijing Auto Show, the automaker unveiled the Concept Coupé SUV, a preview of its entry into the segment BMW created and now dominates.

During a preview event at the New York Auto Show, Dr. Andreas Zygan, Mercedes' chief engineer for sport utility vehicles, said the concept is "unlike any we've done before."

The concept is definitely headed for production, Mercedes says, and will sit a level below the 2015 GLA compact SUV. The automaker promises top of the line driving dynamics to make the funky looking car "curve hungry," and says it combines the "best of both worlds."

Asked during the preview if the Concept Coupé SUV is a copy of the BMW X6, global communications chief Christoph Horn simply said, "customers love more choices."

Here's a closer look at the new Benz:

For its part, BMW is diving deeper into the emergent coupe-SUV segment. At the New York show, it introduced the X4, a smaller version of the successful X6. These cars all look the same:

Rolls Royce Ghost II

For the first time since the Ghost hit the market in 2009, Rolls Royce has released a significant update to its "entry level" model.

The updated "baby Rolls," called the Ghost II, will not feature any radical styling changes to its already sumptuous body.

Instead, Rolls Royce has opted to load the $300,000 Ghost II with a full complement of the company's latest technology. For the first time, Rolls will include its state-of-the-art Satellite Aided Transmission, which the company debuted in the 2014 Wraith coupe.

The new transmission allows the car to see beyond the driver's visual range and continuously tailor its performance characteristics based on satellite information of the location and driving style.

The new baby Rolls will also have the company's latest multi-media control system, which it has awesomely named the Spirit of Ecstasy Rotary Controller. Named after the automaker's iconic hood ornament, the Spirit of Ecstasy Rotary Controller gives occupants instant access to all of the cars on-board features, including Wifi, video conferencing and file-sharing.

The system's script pad will recognize characters in Arabic, Chinese, Latin and English. In typical Rolls-Royce fashion, the company decided against using touch screen technology, because it "might leave unsightly fingerprints" in view of its well-to-do clients.

The new Ghost II will continue to get its power from the company's glorious 48-valve V-12 that produces a prodigious 563hp and 575lb/ft of torque. The BMW-sourced dynamo is good enough to push this 5500lb luxo-barge to 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155.

SOUTH KOREAN PRESIDENT: Actions Of Sunken Ferry Captain 'Akin To Murder'

South Korean Ferry

South Korean President Park Geun-hye has likened the actions of the captain and some crew members of the sunken ferry Sewol to murder.

CNN reports the captain of the South Korean ship, "Lee Joon-seok, is already facing a series of criminal charges for his role in last week's sinking."

The ship sank last week, killing 65 people onboard, many of them students and teachers on a class field trip from Seoul.

237 passengers are still missing as divers continue to search for survivors.

"The actions of the captain and some of the crew are absolutely unacceptable, unforgivable actions that are akin to murder," Park said Monday in comments released by her office. She said she and other South Koreans were filled with "rage and horror."

CNN reports,

[Captain Lee Joon-seok] was not in the steering room when the accident took place, according to police and his own account.

He said he plotted the ship's course, and then went to his cabin briefly "to tend to something." It was then, the captain said, that the accident happened.

The captain was one those rescued soon after the Sewol began to sink, violating an "internationally recognized rule that a captain must stay on the vessel," maritime law attorney Jack Hickey said.

"Pretty much every law, rule, regulation and standard throughout the world says that yes, the captain must stay with the ship until all personnel are safely off of the ship, certainly passengers."

A 16-year-old runaway hid in the wheel well of a flight from San Jose, California to Hawaii and survived, FBI and airline officials said.

The teen allegedly chose Hawaiian Airlines Flight 45 at random.

NBC reports that FBI spokesman Tom Simon said"the teenager was questioned by the FBI after Maui airport personnel found him on the tarmac without identification. After questioning, the boy was taken by child protective services."

Officials are surprised the boy survived the trip halfway across the Pacific Ocean despite extremely cold temperatures and lack of oxygen. He reportedly was "unconscious for most of the flight" and was overwhelmed and disoriented when he was discovered.

He will not be charged.

NBC reports,

In a statement, Hawaiian Airlines said personnel "noticed the individual on the ramp after the flight's arrival and immediately notified airport security."

"Our primary concern now is for the well being of the boy, who is exceptionally lucky to have survived," the airline said.

This Super-Luxurious Chinese Sedan Just Sold For $800,000

Hongqi L7

What do a Bentley Flying Spur, a Ferrari 458, and a 1,900-square-foot South Beach Condo have in common with each other?

They all cost less than the $803,000 a Chinese businessman paid for his Hongqi L5 luxury sedan this week.

Hongqi, Chinese for Red Flag, is the flagship product of China FAW Group and has long been the vehicle of choice for the leaders of the Chinese Communist Party.

The exact details of this particular sedan are hard to come by, but according to China Auto Web, all L-series models are powered by an all-aluminum 6.0 litre V-12 engine producing 402hp and 405 lb/ft.

The L-series is also said to feature "intelligent" 4-wheel-drive technology and will ride on an adjustable hydro-pneumatic suspension.

The 7,000-pound sedan is an incredible melange of modern and retro-themes. While the side and rear profile of the car are reminiscent of the Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph/Bentley Arnage of the late 1990s and early 2000s, the front end is decidedly more archaic.

In fact, the car's designers drew inspiration for the front fascia from Chairman Mao's 1960s era Hongqi CA770 sedan.

According to Bloomberg, FAW began taking orders for the L-Series sedan this week at the 2014 China Auto Show. FAW's decision to shift the L-Series from exclusive government runabout to commercialized production vehicle can be interpreted as an attempt to cash in on the Chinese government's push for domestic branded products. In fact, the Chinese government has now banned the purchase of foreign-branded vehicles with public money.

Wang Zhonghua, the buyer of the $800,000 L5, tells Bloomberg that delivery is expected to take place in roughly 3 months.

In addition to its in-house brands, FAW also produces vehicles for Audi, General Motors, Toyota, and Volkswagen under joint-venture agreements.
