Porsche Now Sells 21 Versions Of The 911 — Here They Are

Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS

With the recent introduction of the 911 GTS Club Coupe, Porsche is now selling an astonishing 21 different versions of its iconic sports car.

To many, all current 911s pretty much look same. And if you ask Top Gear's bombastic host and longtime newspaper columnist Jeremy Clarkson, he'll tell you that all Porsche 911s since the model's debut in 1963 look identical.

The truth is, most of the various versions of the current generation — known as the 991 — do look similar, but they can all be identified by numerous subtle, but important differences.

Like Taco Bell in the fast food industry, what Porsche has managed to do so successfully is create multiple iterations of the 911 by mixing and matching the same ingredients, packaging them in lots of different ways. And if you've ever driven a 911, you'll probably agree with me in saying...there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

So here it is — the most current lineup of Porsche's 911 Taco Bell Menu.

Carrera: The Carrera is the "base" 911, if there is such as thing. It's powered by a 3.4-liter 350hp flat 6...

....and the Cabriolet is the convertible version of the Carrera.

The Carrera 4 Coupe is a Carrera Coupe with all-wheel-drive...

I Lived In A Luxury Van For A Week, And It Was Almost As Good As A Real Apartment

van life

It started out as a joke. “Hey, Airstream wants to lend us a fancy touring van for a week. What should we do with it?,” said Matt DeBord, Business Insider's transportation editor.

“I don’t know, man,” I said. “Maybe I’ll live in it. It’s probably nicer than my apartment.”

And with that it was done. I had spoken without thinking, my mother’s cardinal sin. As much as I tried to backpedal, I was going to live in a van down by the river — a joke I now never want to hear again — for a week.

I found myself on the following Monday morning sitting on a bench outside my tiny Greenpoint, Brooklyn, apartment, waiting for the van.

Monday

My first impression of the 2015 Airstream Interstate Grand Tour EXT Touring Coach was, Damn, this thing is huge. The Grand Tour, which is basically a tricked-out 24-foot-long Mercedes Sprinter Van, is also a huge challenge to park, as I learned watching the nice folks who dropped it off try to do in a small space in front of my building.

Then I climbed inside. This beast of a van had everything.

Two TVs! Two sinks! A normal-size bed! Granite countertops! No way — a microwave! These thoughts ran through my mind so fast that I almost missed the retractable awning, which can be extended from the van to provide shade for barbecues and the like.

van lifeAt $153,000, the Interstate Grand Tour is the product of a 10-year partnership with Mercedes Benz and Airstream, in an effort to modernize and refine the Airstream brand. Airstream builds their luxury vans on MB chassis, and MB sells them at their dealerships.

The van has a gas-powered generator, propane, and water tank, all of which allow for pretty much self-sustained living, even when the van’s engine isn’t on. There was an onboard heater and air-conditioner, a refrigerator and a freezer, a two-burner stovetop, several tables, and as much storage as you could ever want.

While it's meant for traveling and road-tripping in luxury, the van felt like a tiny apartment on wheels.

This might be fun, I thought.

I drove around for 20 minutes trying to find a parking space that wasn’t in front of a fire hydrant, and then activated the bed and tested out my sleeping arrangements. The bed, which mechanically folded down from a bench seat, was roughly king-size, if a bit shorter. I’m a tall guy, so I had to position myself diagonally. Seatbelt clips poked me in my back. I looked up and saw my breath hang in the air of the cold van. Outside, the loud sounds of industrial Greenpoint buzzed away. I started having second thoughts.

seat fold down van life

I headed into the office and passed around my phone to show photos to all my coworkers, who were impressed by "Helen," my grandmother's name and the name I'd given the van. And I began to dread the evening ahead of me.

“Excited for your first big night in the van?” one person asked.

“Oh, yeah — can’t wait!” I said, lying.

After work, I got dinner with friends. We finished off a round of after-dinner drinks, and my companions looked like they were thinking about heading home. But I begged them to stay. Anything to put off the inevitable tossing and turning and poking from metal objects.

van life

Several rounds later, I shuffled off to my new van-away-from-home. I turned on the heater, which was much louder than I'd expected, grabbed the thin blanket left for me, folded down my bed, and drifted off to a light, dreamless sleep.

Tuesday

Confession time: After tossing and turning for five hours, I snuck home to sleep an extra two hours in my warm, soft bed. So sue me.

After I arrived at work and once again faced myriad questions from coworkers, it became increasingly clear to me that the curiosity wouldn't stop until I returned the van, and that I was in for the long haul.

I decided to man up and commit to van life.

van life

After work I swung by the grocery store, then went home to pack a bag and grab some DVDs for the onboard TVs. I unloaded my gear and settled in, stretching my legs and getting a real lay of the land. I could almost stand up straight in the van, but found that being six-two had me constantly hunched over for fear of smashing my head on some object on the ceiling. I tested out all the seats, turned on the radio loud, and opened all the drawers and storage spaces.

This thing was starting to feel more homey.

I cooked Italian sausages in one of the pans that came with the van. It’s harder than you would imagine to cook on a stovetop that's pitched slightly downward because of the parking space you've chosen. Also, I worried about the smoke coming from the pan. Luckily, there was a small air vent in the ceiling.
 van life

After microwaving a paper bowl full of canned chili (bachelor life at its finest), I settled down at one of the foldout tables and attempted to pop in a DVD. It was then that I realized what I thought was a DVD player was Blu-ray. Seriously, who has Blu-ray discs laying around?

Since I had no form of entertainment, I ate my food, made my bed, and turned in early. (It’s amazing how much more a place can feel like a home when you make the bed.)

Wednesday

I woke up better rested and attempted to take a shower in the bathroom, which converts into a shower stall. I fiddled with the many knobs and switches in the van, but couldn't figure out how to get the water to get hot. I shrugged it off and headed to work, knowing any odors emanating from me could be written off because of my living situation.

But first, I had to find a new parking space as my current one had to be vacated for street cleaning. Driving around my neighborhood early in the morning was oddly relaxing and a great way to start a day. I sort of wished I could do it every day. Sort of.

During the planning stage of my adventure, when I thought living in a van was a brilliant idea, my editors told me I had to host a party in my new digs. “What a funny picture that will be!” they told me. Since then, I had been floating the idea to my friends, luring them with promises of free Brie and sparkling cider.

But my reminder texts to friends not to forget my van party that evening went unanswered. I began to sweat. The hours at my desk ticked by. Work ended and I headed to the van, where I nervously set up.

van life

The text started to come in.

“Sorry, I have to work late!” one flaky friend replied.

“So, you’re asking me to come hang out in a van? Can’t we just go to a bar?” asked another.

I began to realize that this party might not happen. “C'mon, man, you know I have to do this for work,” I said.

When nine o'clock rolled around, I started thinking of other ways to spend the evening.

Have you ever ordered a pizza on Seamless, but instead of putting an address into the prompt you give directions to the nearest cross streets and type Look for the huge silver van and knock hard?

I can tell you it’s weird. But thanks to the marvels of modern technology and a brave delivery guy, I got my small pepperoni an hour later.

van life

Still Blu-ray-less, I read a book, caught up on some emails, and did some cleaning. Full of pizza, I headed to bed. I knew the drill, and had even found a position to avoid any uncomfortable plastic pieces. The hum of the heater was now more like a white-noise machine. I drifted off to sleep, dreaming of the open road.

Thursday

Still couldn't get the shower to work, which was bad news since I had planned a date in the van, another promise to my editors.

I set up my laptop to do some work. Today was the day where I attempted to “work from van.” I can’t remember if I was told there would be Wi-Fi, but after a few minutes fiddling with the front dash computer, I gave up and used my iPhone as a hotspot.

Spotty service aside, working from the van wasn't so bad. It's nice to be able to drive your office to the coffee shop when you run out of java.

van life

With the curtains drawn and headphones on to drown out the outside noise, the back of the van became a fortress of solitude. Time passed quickly, and before I knew it, it was time for my date.

Like any respectable gentleman, I picked up my date in my new ride. Once we got over the sheer novelty of the situation, we decided to take advantage of it and drive somewhere new. We decided on City Island, a tiny fishing enclave in the Bronx. We both wanted some crab cakes and clam chowder.

van life

Driving Helen long distances turned out not to be as scary as I'd imagined. The rearview mirror is a video feed from a camera in the back, so the tail is easily viewable. There’s a sensor around the perimeter of the car, so that when any solid object comes within a certain distance of the van, a beeping noise goes off. Once I got over the fact that I was driving a 24-foot-long rolling home on the FDR, I started to enjoy it.

After getting lost on Randalls Island, we made it to our destination. (The looks we got as we drove down the main drag were priceless.) Crab cakes consumed, we then got lost again, this time in Queens for an hour. Again, being a gentleman, I dropped my date off at her place.

Then I drove Helen back to the outskirts of Greenpoint and parked her for the night next to a warehouse. As I settled into my fold-down seat bed for the last time, it felt much more comfortable. The van was growing on me.

van life

Friday

The sun shone through the curtains in the window, waking me up early. It was my last day in Helen. I took one last ceremonial lap around my neighborhood before heading into work, giving her a pat on her door before leaving.

It was fittingly raining when I returned to the van to hand over the keys to the guy from the loaner company. As I watched the silver beast drive off without me on board, I felt a pang of sadness in my heart. I hope we meet again someday, Helen.

The Verdict

The truth is, given the choice of living in the van or living in my apartment, no matter how small and old, I would choose the apartment. Even though the van grew on me rapidly, becoming like a second home, the comforts of my first home — with its real bed, bathroom, shower, and couch — still win.

Over the course of five days the van did begin to feel cozy. It became less like camping and more like living. Matt Foley, the "Saturday Night Live" character who lived in a van down by the river could do much worse than this van, with its state-of-the-art amenities and ample living space.

And if I were on a cross-country road trip, I would choose this vehicle in a heartbeat. I'd love to borrow Helen.

Maybe that will be my next story.

Here's How Studying Physics Has Helped Elon Musk Find Insights Everybody Else Misses

$

Elon Musk

When Elon Musk was an undergraduate at the University of Pennsylvania, he pursued a dual degree in business and physics.

"It was an unusual combination,"he told Physics World in 2007, "and I enjoyed the physics more. I'm not sure I would study business again if I could replay things."

The interest in physics was long in the making for Musk. He's said that he grew up in a "technical" household in South Africa, thanks to his father being an engineer. He was inspired by Richard Feynman, the American physicist who pioneered quantum mechanics and made physics accessible to laypeople in books like "Six Easy Pieces.

Musk went as far as being accepted to a physics Ph.D. program at Stanford University, but dropped out to get in on the internet boom.

"It's a common story,"Musk said. "Google, Yahoo, and several other firms were started by people who dropped out of their graduate programs at Stanford."

And while physics and business made for an odd undergraduate pairing, Musk has said that his pursuit of the former has shaped his success in the latter.

"Of necessity, physics had to develop a framework of thinking that would allow understanding counterintuitive elements of reality,"he said. "Something like quantum physics is not very intuitive, and in order to make progress, physics essentially evolved a framework of thinking that was very effective for coming to correct answers that are not obvious. And in order to do this, it requires quite a lot of mental exertion."

That framework is called "first principles reasoning," Musk said, wherein you "try to identify the most fundamental truths in any particular arena and you reason up from there."

It's been crucial to the success of Musk's big-name ventures — namely SpaceX, the company whose aim is to make humanity an interplanetary species.

With a framework for thinking taken from physics, SpaceX was able to create a major victory in its supply chain.

"Historically, [if you look at] how much rockets cost, you'd see that the trend line has been pretty flat and in the United States, it's actually gotten worse over time," Musk explained, saying that if you were reasoning by analogy, you'd assume that that's just the way things are.

"But it's not," he said. "The first-principle approach would be to ask what materials is a rocket made of and how much do those materials cost. When we look at that we say, 'Wow — in terms of raw materials cost, it's a few percent of what the price of a rocket is. So there must be something wrong here, and people are being pretty silly. If we can be clever, we can make a much lower-cost rocket.'"

That's exactly what Musk did. By finding out how much rockets really cost, SpaceX built one for about 2% of the typical price.

The takeaway? Like its sibling field of study, engineering, physics trains leaders to understand problems in their most essential parts, and then deduce from there — often with staggering amounts of innovation to follow. Just ask Jeff Bezos, the one-time engineer.

Check Out A 'Filthy' And 'Disgusting' British Airways First-Class Seat

british airways boeing 747

First-class airline tickets are expensive. Prices can easily reach $15,000 a flight, and that's not even for the really opulent first-class suites that have become more prevalent on the most prestigious carriers.

Those go for as much as $30,000.

Just for the sake of comparison, Mercedes-Benz is offering its CLA sedan — an entire car — for $29,995.

For that kind of money, passengers in first class expect a fine glass of champagne, in-flight entertainment, and an environment free from ... dried-on stains and thick layers of dust.

That's why a YouTube video posted by British journalist Owen Thomas last weekend was so shocking. (CNN originally reported Thomas' experience.)

In the 29-second video — which has garnered more than 1 million views — Thomas documented his "filthy" first-class experience on board a British Airways jet from London to St. Lucia.  British Airways First ClassThomas grows increasingly annoyed as he shows off the "cheap, motel-esque" dried stains and deep layers of dust that encrust his very expensive seat.

"This is British Airways first class and it is absolutely filthy," the enraged journalist says in the video. "You see the marks on here you can just scrape off with you finger."

"It’s when you open your seat, the real horror begins. This is first class. This is British Airways first class. It’s disgusting," Thomas added.

British Airways First Class

British Airways didn't let the video pass without comment.

"We have contacted our customer to apologise. We are very sorry that on this occasion we have fallen short of our usual high standards," a representative for the airline told the Telegraph.

"We pride ourselves on delivering a relaxing and pleasant experience in first class, and are taking immediate action to address this issue."

Thomas' encounter with what looks like a fairly offensive level of filth is alarming, given that BA has built a solid reputation in recent years for quality service, especially in the first class cabins. After all, the airline's motto is "To Fly, To Serve."

But this incident seems to be the exception rather than the rule. British Airways is a Skytrax four-star airline, and reviews for the carrier's service are generally positive.

And besides, it's not as if YouTube is jammed with videos about poorly cleaned first-class seats — on BA's planes or anyone else's.

Here is the complete video:

victoria's secret football superbowl ad

Super Bowl XLIX is fast approaching, and already some of the world's biggest brands are teasing details about the ads they will be running during the big game.

Click here to skip straight to the ads>>

The commercial breaks are once again set to be a flashy affair, and it's little surprise: Super Bowl 2015 broadcaster NBC is seeking $4.4 million to $4.5 million per 30-second spot, up on the $4 million price tag FOX set last year. Ninety-five percent of the in-game TV ad space has been sold so far.

We're compiling everything you need to know about the commercial side of this year's big game, and we'll keep updating this post right up until Feb. 1, when you can follow our live coverage.

All the brands in this slideshow are organized in alphabetical order for ease of navigation.

Anheuser-Busch

The brewer Anheuser-Busch is going all out once again, this time airing three minutes, 30 seconds of ads during the event.

It has two ads planned for Bud Light, each created by a different agency, and another for Bud, as Adweek details.

  • "Lost Dog," has been created by Anomaly and will show how "only your best buds are the ones who always have your back." It acts as the sequel to last year's much-loved "Puppy Love" spot and features a cute canine and the famous Clydesdale horses.
  • Another Bud Light spot created by EnergyBBDO is called "Coin" and tells the story of a drinker who plays a life-size Pac Man game. The brand released a teaser, so we know what to expect, on January 16. And it released the full ad on January 21 (watch it below.)
  • The final spot is for Bud, which is another Anomaly effort. This ad focuses on how the beer is brewed.

The brewer plans to release each ad online in the week before the game.

Here's the Bud Light "Coin" spot:

Avocados from Mexico

Avocados from Mexico announced in January it would run a 30-second ad during the Super Bowl, but it will keep its TV ad creative under wraps until the game.

The brand will also be creating other marketing opportunities around the football season. That will include social-media activity featuring American TV host Mario Lopez and in-store ads.

In a press release, Avocados from Mexico explained the reasoning behind advertising a warm-weather fruit during the middle of winter: During the month of last year’s Super Bowl, 70 million avocados were sold in the US.

BMW

BMW is returning to the Super Bowl after a four-year hiatus, with a 60-second spot to promote its i3 electric car.

BMW's North American vice president of marketing Trudy Hardy says the company will use the Super Bowl as a platform to "educate" viewers about the benefits of electric cars.

KBS is the agency behind the spot, but we don't have any more details yet about its creative direction.

A pilot successfully ditched his plane 253 miles northeast of the Hawaiian island of Maui after going into an incredible nosedive, according to a US Coast Guard video

Plane Crash Map

The pilot, flying a single-engine Cirrus SR-22, had to take emergency actions after his aircraft ran out of fuel. The plane quickly fell into a nosedive before deploying its parachute. Fortunately for the pilot, the US Coast Guard witnessed the incident and deployed a rescue ship.

The Coast Guard filmed the entire episode. We have created GIFs of the incident below.

After running out of fuel, the Cirrus SR-22 quickly began a nosedive out of the sky.

The Amount Americans Are Driving Hasn't Surged Like This In 10 Years (DIA, SPY, QQQ, TLT, IWM, USO, OIL)

Americans haven't ramped up their driving habits like this in 10 years.

According to analyst Mike Baker at Deutsche Bank, the number of miles driven by Americans increased 2% in the three months ending in November, the fastest increase since 2005.

November also marked the ninth straight month in which Americans increased their miles driven against last year.

DB miles driven

In a note to clients, Baker wrote:

We expect miles driven to continue to accelerate in the coming months as gas price declines have gotten more pronounced in December and January versus previous months. December gas prices were down 21% year over year and January is pacing down 30%, compared to 5%-9% in October and November.

Here's the crazy gas-price chart that makes it easy to see why Americans are driving more. A lot more.

The Massachusetts State Police have a humorous warning about the impending winter storm that's supposed to slam the East Coast on Monday.

Boston is expecting 18 to 24 inches of snow with wind gusts of up to 75 mph.

Trooper Dustin Fitch tweeted this photo of a (Photoshopped) road sign that pokes fun at the Boston accent while warning people of the coming snow:

Local Massachusetts police departments have posted the same photo to Facebook, and others like it have circulated on social media in the past.

The sign in the original photo is a bit more dry:

Residents of the Northeastern US have been buckling down for what forecasters have called a "crippling and potentially historic" snowstorm.

The storm has arrived.

It's making its way up the coast from northern New Jersey to southern Maine, covering the region in more than two feet of snow.

Take a look at this terrifying satellite image of the blizzard:

As you might expect, at the New York region's three major airports, things have been murky. Here's the breakdown:

  • The Federal Aviation Administration issued a "ground stop" for operations at Newark Liberty International Airport, but it has been lifted. The airport is now operating with only limited delays of 15 minutes or less.
  • LaGuardia Airport's ground stop has also been lifted. LaGuardia is also operating with delays of 15 minutes or less.
  • Despite worsening weather conditions Monday afternoon, JFK airport is operating with delays of 15 minutes or less as well.
  • United Airlines announced earlier today that it would cancel all flights out of its hub at Newark Liberty International Airport.

NYC Airspace Blizzard 2015.jpgNumerous flights were canceled in advance of the storm. As of 5:30 p.m. ET, as snowfall intensified and darkness fell, flight traffic in the New York area had lightened considerably.

By 7:00 p.m., airspace over New York City was all but empty.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a press conference that it could be "a storm the likes of which we have never seen before." In fact, the storm is on track to match or surpass the snowfall seen during the past century's top five record-breaking snowstorms.

In its most recent update, the National Weather Service predicted up to 36 inches of snow for much of Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx, and 18 to 24 inches for Manhattan and Staten Island. The weather service has also warned of "near hurricane-force" winds and zero-visibility conditions.

Other major cities are expecting similarly heavy snowfall, with Boston and its surrounding areas looking at 18 to 36 inches and Philadelphia expecting nearly a foot and a half.

Thousands of flights have been canceled through midweek.

In New York, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority posted the following service update to its website:

NYC Transit will store trains underground on express tracks starting this evening to protect the subway car fleet from the elements and ensure that trains are ready for the next rush period. This means that only local service will be available and all overnight construction work is cancelled.

Trains were added to both Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad service to aid commuters who planned to leave New York City early. The MTA advised that LIRR service stopped at 11 p.m.

In addition, the MTA has announced that all subway service in the city was suspended at 11 p.m as well.

New Jersey Transit announced that it shut down all service at 8 p.m. on Monday, with train service not expected to resume until Thursday.

The MTA also said that service on the B train would end early, and that service in the 7 train could be curtailed.

Trains were added to both Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad service, to aid commuters who planned to leave New York City early. The MTA advised that LIRR service could be stopped at 11 p.m.

New Jersey Transit announced that it would shut down all service at 8:00 p.m. on Monday, with train service not expected to resume until Thursday.

In anticipation of several feet of snow, New York City has suspended alternate-side parking regulations, which means that drivers may have to spend some time later this week excavating their cars from snow drifts.

Garbage trucks will be off the streets as the city gears up its fleet of snowplows to kick into action once the heavy weather arrives.

The New York City public schools canceled all after-school activities and announced that the system would be closed on Tuesday.

The first major snowstorm to hit the Northeast in 2015 has arrived, and it's shaping up to be just as massive as we thought.

The storm is affecting the east coast from New Jersey to Maine. More than 2 feet of snow is predicted to fall on some areas.

The photos coming in are staggering.
