One Of The Most Crucial Air Routes In The World Goes Right Through Ukrainian Airspace

Screen Shot radar

Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 reportedly crashed over the volatile region of Ukraine where government forces have been battling pro-Russian separatists. Ukrainian officials have said the plane was shot down by the separatists, raising the possibility commercial aircrafts flying through the area could be vulnerable to potential ground-to-air attacks.

Even more worrying is that the planned path that brought MH17 near the disputed region, known as airway L980, is one of the most popular and most congested air routes in the world. L980 is a key link between major international hubs in Europe, such as London Heathrow, Amsterdam Schiphol, and Frankfurt, and Asian megacities, like Singapore, Mumbai, and Hong Kong. The airspace over Ukraine is traveled by virtually every commercial flight from Western Europe to south Asia.

Because of this, the crash could have a significant effect on commercial air travel with hundreds of flights expected to be affected by this incident. For example, at just one hub, Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, which was the origination point of MH17, there are dozens of flights either en route or scheduled to take L980 in the next 24 hours.

Ukraine AirspaceLufthansa, Europe's largest airline, has already rerouted its planes. An airline representative told Business Insider it ordered all flights to avoid Ukrainian airspace and divert south over Romania in light of the MH17 crash. Virgin Atlantic, KLM, and British Airways have not replied to our requests for information. But recent radar images of Ukraine indicate that other airlines have already followed Lufthansa's lead and ordered their planes to leave the area.

For the second time in four months, a Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 disappeared from radar earlier today. Authorities confirmed that the plane crashed in eastern Ukraine, killing all 295 people on board.

While, early reports indicate that the crash was likely caused by a missile strike, those reports have not yet been verified. Here's what we do know about the 17-year-old Malaysia Airlines aircraft that went down today.

The plane is a Boeing 777-2H6ER with the registration number 9M-MRD. According to airfleets.net, the aircraft carries Malaysia Airlines' H6 Boeing customer code, but is owned by Abu Dhabi-based Waha Leasing. The plane first flew on July 17, 1997, and has spent its whole career as one of 14 777s in the Malaysia Airlines fleet.Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 9M-MRD InteriorLike Malaysia Airlines flight 370, which disappeared in March, the plane that crashed in Ukraine was also powered by a pair of Rolls-Royce Trent 892 engines that each produce as much as 92,800 pounds of thrust.

The 777-200ER or Extended Range, can carry as many as 400 passengers with a maximum range of nearly 8,900 miles.

The Boeing 777 has one of the most pristine safety records in aviation history. With more than 1,200 jets in service, Flight MH17 is just the third fatal incident involving the model since its debut in 1994. However, all three incidents occurred in the last 13 months (the third was Asiana Airlines flight 214, which crash-landed in San Francisco last July, killing two).

On a normal travel day, the airspace over Ukraine is some of the most congested in the world. It serves as a major cross roads for flights connecting major hubs in Europe with megacities in Asia.

However, after Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 was reportedly shot down earlier today, most of the world's major airlines have ordered their planes to avoid the area completely.

The above map, which was tweeted by Newsweek, shows Ukranian airspace a few hours after MH17 lost contact with radar.

Two of Europe's largest airlines, Lufthansa and British Airways, have both told Business Insider that they have ordered their planes away from the disputed region.

To avoid the Russian-Ukraine conflict altogether, Lufthansa has specifically ordered their planes to take a southerly route over Romania.

More than 100 of the 298 passengers onboard a Malaysia Airlines plane when it was shot down over eastern Ukraine were headed to the International Aids Conference in Melbourne, Australia, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

"The International AIDS Society (IAS) today expresses its sincere sadness at receiving news that a number of colleagues and friends en route to attend the 20th International AIDS Conference taking place in Melbourne, Australia, were on board the Malaysian Airlines MH17 flight that has crashed over Ukraine earlier today," the society wrote on its website."At this incredibly sad and sensitive time the IAS stands with our international family and sends condolences to the loved ones of those who have been lost to this tragedy."

The flight out of Amsterdam was headed to Kuala Lumpur, with some of the passengers planning to connect for a follow-on flight to Australia. As the flight passed over territory held by pro-Russian separatists, it was shot down by a surface-to-air missile.

According to The Australian, it is believed that 108 of the passengers onboard were expected in Melbourne.

"Yet again, we're devastated by a similar tragedy," health research Clive Aspin told The Herald, reflecting on AIDS researcher Jonathan Mann's death in a plane crash 16 years ago. "It's going to be a very somber mood at the conference in Melbourne, especially for those of us who have been coming to these conferences for many years."

Dr. Joep Lange, a leading AIDS researcher from the Netherlands, was reportedly onboard according to the Daily Mail. His death was not yet confirmed, but many took to Twitter to express condolences:

Glen Raymond Thomas, a spokesman for the World Health Organization based in Geneva, was also reportedly onboard.

Why Unhappy Retirees Are Driving BMWs

bmw parked town

If you want to be happy in retirement, consider ditching your BMW.

Certified financial planner Wes Moss has surveyed over 1,300 retirees in 46 states about everything from their assets to their happiness and the cars in their driveways.

He found that when it comes to luxury cars, the most common pick among unhappy retirees is the BMW.

In his book, "You Can Retire Sooner Than You Think: The 5 Money Secrets Of The Happiest Retirees," Moss explains that this correlation might have less to do with the car itself than the impression it leaves on others.

He suspects that BMW owners are "still competing. They buy the 'Ultimate Driving Machine' because they're looking for a distraction — a high-end status symbol to make them feel better about themselves," he writes. "But in purchasing a car, they have opted, either knowingly or unknowingly, to add an additional financial burden to their lives."

On the other hand, the happiest retirees in comparably luxurious cars are driving Lexuses — and in a five-year price comparison, Moss and his team found that owning a Lexus costs 16% less than a BMW. Happy retirees, he found, bought their cars for "comfort" and "cushion."

In his book, Moss also lists the non-luxury cars that tend to pair up with happy and unhappy retirees, from Nissan and Subaru (happy) to Chrysler and Dodge (unhappy).

As Moss says, driving a particular car won't magically boost or tank your happiness level ... but the findings seem like more than a coincidence.

Witness At The Crash Site In Ukraine: 'There Are Bodies Scattered Everywhere'

plane crash screenshot ABC news

Freelance photographer and videographer John Wendle spoke with ABC News on Thursday night from the Ukrainian village of Gribovka, near the Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 crash site.

He described a gruesome scene there around 10 p.m. EST.

Among referencing a number of Ukrainian emergency vehicles, Wendle noted rebel fighters had secured the area. During the interview, he started speaking to one in Russian, later translating that the man had pointed out blood and remains splattered on the ground with his flashlight.

"You can see that now?" the host asked. "Yeah," Wendle replied. "It's a pretty grim site."

Wendle also saw men walking on a small country road between two fields with flashlights and guns, noting that a "Mr. Borodai" (potentially pro-Russian separatist leader Alexander Borodai), was currently surveying the scene with his "close security detail."

The host tried to ask about the rebels' actions and numbers — but Wendle once again became distracted and disturbed by what he saw.

"There are bodies scattered everywhere," Wendle said. "They just shined a light on a woman. She's almost unrecognizable, just a lower torso."

MAPS: MH17's Usual Route Would Have Kept It Out Of Rebel-Held Eastern Ukraine

$

The route Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 took on several previous trips in the past month curved sharply downward as it entered Ukraine airspace, directing the plane away from the area of east Ukraine where a Boeing 777 was shot down on Thursday.

Data from the flight-tracking website FlightAware shows that the inbound flight from Kuala Lumpur to Amsterdam on Thursday took a different route than the plane that went down:

Malaysia Airlines 17 flight path

This route kept it away from the area of eastern Ukraine held by pro-Russian separatists, who are believed to be responsible for shooting down the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777, which was flying from Amsterdam back to Kuala Lumpur.

The map below shows the route that MH17 took Thursday:

MH17 flight path

The route is significantly more northern, bringing the plane into the part of east Ukraine that is seeing rebel fighting. The flight might have rerouted because of weather, according to CNN.

Redditor ra66itz created an overlay that shows the Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 routes from July 6th to July 17th (with the downed plane's flight path in red):

Thursday's MH17 flight appears to be the only one that went so far north over eastern Ukraine.

As the below graphic from Reuters shows, most of the separatist fighting in Ukraine during the past month has taken place in Donetsk and Luhansk:

Ukraine rebel fighting map

The flight paths from previous flights do not seem to cross into this area.

An aviation expert confirmed the odd flight path with The Telegraph.

Robert Mark, a commercial pilot who edits Aviation International News Safety magazine, said the downed plane took a path that was 300 miles north of its usual route.

Malaysia Airlines said Thursday's route was an "approved route" that was deemed safe for air travel and used by other airlines.

Nearly 300 people died in the attack.

A Fateful Thunderstorm May Have Doomed Flight MH17

$
0

map malaysia airlines flight path ukraine

When Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 went down near the Eastern Ukrainian town of Luhansk, it was roughly 300 miles off its normal course, a route that would have taken it through much safer airspace over the southwestern part of the country. Many theories for this diversion have come to light in the time since the tragic crash, which took the lives of 298 people, however, the ultimate explanation may very well be simple – the airliner may have been off course simply to avoid flying into a thunderstorm.

According to CNN, there was a significant storm situated right over MH17's planned path through southern Ukraine. In response, the pilots may have requested a route through the northeast to provide a safer and smoother ride for the passengers. Unfortunately, the course change took them right over the disputed region in the east where Ukrainian forces have been battling pro-Russian separtists.

The airspace over eastern Ukraine has been and still is a no fly zone. The FAA issued a ban on operations over the area, however that ban only applies to planes flying between the altitudes of 26,000 and 32,000 ft. At the same time, the Ukranian Government reportedly shut down all civilian flights in the region under 7,900 meters or 26,000 ft. Ukrainian air traffic control assigned MH17 an altitude of 33,000ft, which complied with both no fly orders.

Requesting a course change to avoid storms is common practice for commercial airline pilots. It's done to avoid the potential turbulence that may scare and injure passengers, but also to prevent damage to the aircraft. Past crashes have shown that flying into a storm can cause everything from engine failure to sensor failure to structural damage to the aircraft.

In April of 1977, Southern Airways Flight 242 crashed on a road in New Hope, Georgia after suffering double engine failure while flying through a thunderstorm. The crash of the hail-battered DC-9 airliner killed 72 of the 81 people onboard the jet as well as 9 people on the ground.  The NTSB cited the pilot's lack of accurate weather information as well his decision to fly through the thunderstorm as contributing causes for the crash.

More recently in 2009, Air France Flight 447 crashed in the Atlantic Ocean after flying through an equatorial thunderstorm. The Airbus A333-200 suffered a failure in its pitot tubes that provide the pilots and computers with airspeed information. The pitot tube failure led to an inexperienced pilot to mismanage the crisis; causing the aircraft to crash killing all 228 souls onboard.

Malaysia MH17

Malaysia Airlines on Saturday morning released a full list of passengers aboard flight MH17, which was shot down over eastern Ukraine on Thursday.

On its website Saturday, the airline also released a full list of nationalities of the 298 passengers and crew on the flight. There were no survivors on the flight, which is believed to have been shot down by pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine who may have had some help from Moscow

"Each of the numbers represents a life lost, and a family in anguish," the airline said in a statement.

"Malaysia mourns the loss of all 298 passengers and crew. We feel for their families. And we promise to do all we can to ensure that the investigation is completed, and that justice is done."

Those passengers included:

Netherlands: 193 (including one person who had dual citizenship with the United States)

Malaysia: 43 (including 15 crew members and 2 infants)

Australia: 27

Indonesia: 12 (including 1 infant)

United Kingdom: 10 (including one person who had dual citizenship with South Africa)

Germany: 4

Belgium: 4

Philippines: 3

Canada: 1

New Zealand: 1

Total: 298

On Thursday, Fox and Reuters reported that 23 U.S. citizens were aboard flight MH17. However, on Friday morning President Barack Obama announced that it was one U.S. citizen on the flight a 19-year-old Dutch-American student named Quinn Lucas Schansman who was born in Fort Lee, New Jersey but later moved to Holland.

Schansman was planning on meeting up with his dad, stepmother, and younger siblings in Indonesia and then vacationing in Bali for a week, NBC News reported

Several people who were a part of the international HIV and AIDS community were also on MH17 because they were en route to the 2014 International AIDS conference in Melbourne, Australia.

Initial reports suggested that as many as 100 passengers were on their way to that conference. However, on Friday the Washington Post reported that conference organizers had only confirmed seven attendees were on board including AIDS researchers and activists.

Malaysia Airline says it is retiring the flight number of the plane that was shot down over Ukraine.

The carrier said in a statement Sunday that beginning Friday, it will no longer use MH17 to identify any of its Amsterdam-Kuala Lumpur flights. It said it is doing so "out of respect for our crew and passengers" who were aboard the plane.

The airline said the new flight number replacing MH17 would be MH19.

It also said there would be no changes to the frequency of its Amsterdam-Kuala Lumpur service, and that it would continue to operate daily flights between the cities.

Flight 17 was shot down over Ukraine on Thursday with 298 people onboard.

Pro-Russian Rebels Say They Have The Black Boxes From Downed MH17

RTR3ZEBO

A separatist leader said on Sunday they were keeping what they presumed were the black boxes from the downed Malaysian airliner in the eastern city of Donetsk, but they would need experts to confirm that they were the plane's flight recorders.

"Some items, presumably the black boxes, were found, and they have been delivered to Donetsk and they are under our control," Aleksander Borodai, prime minister of the self-styled Donetsk People's Republic, told a news conference.

"There are no specialists among us who could pinpoint the look of the black boxes, but we brought to Donetsk some technical items which could be the black boxes of the airliner."

Another rebel official, Sergei Kavtaradze, said he thought there were two of the presumed black boxes.

Black boxes record what's happening on board and are able to survive a crash so that investigators can discover the cause of an accident.

A growing mountain of evidence indicates that the Russian-led rebels shot down the Malaysia Airlines flight, mistaking it for a Ukrainian military transport plane, with a BUK missile system supplied by Moscow.

U.S. intelligence has confirmed that Russia supllied the sophisticated missile launchers and that the systems were moved back in Russia less than 12 hours after MH17 fell from the sky.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has blamed the incident, which killed 298 people, on Ukraine's government. Ukraine has accused the Russia-backed rebels, many of whom are Russian citizens, of tampering with and hiding evidence at the crash site.

“Their key task is to destroy possible evidence,” said Andriy Parubiy, head of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council. “It will be hard to conduct a full investigation with some of the objects being taken away, but we will do our best.”

On Sunday, Ukraine's security service (SBU) released a video that apparently shows a commander from the Volstok Battalion telling rebels at the crash site to hide the black boxes because leaders in Moscow wants them.

Here's a video of the retrieval of the black boxed, according to Reuters:

The sunken Costa Concordia cruise ship that hit a rock and capsized off an Italian island more than two years ago has finally risen from its watery resting place.

Predictably, it's in bad shape — the luxury cruise liner is now just a shell of its former self.

The ship, which is more than twice the size of the Titanic, will now be broken up for scrap, according to Reuters.

Italian authorities have released photos of the inside of the ship now that the official inquiry has closed.

Here's what's left of an elevator bay, with stained walls and carpet:

Here Are The Ambitious Plans To Turn London's Heathrow Airport Into A City

London's Heathrow Airport could soon become a destination itself.

The city's transportation department recently commissioned three architecture firms to dream up plans for a city to replace the airport, if plans to build a new, larger airport along the Thames Estuary ever come to fruition.

"Heathrow City" would potentially support 90,000 new jobs, house 190,000 people, and add close to $13 billion to the UK economy, according to the Mayor's office.

The designs released last week include an airship port, a technology campus, and a medieval-style city center. All would help accommodate the city's forecasted population growth.

"The demand for new homes and jobs in the capital is such that we must be ready to start redeveloping Heathrow the moment it moves to its new site," Mayor Boris Johnson said. "We asked our architects to be as creative as possible and these designs illustrate strikingly different visions of a Heathrow of the future."

The UK's Airports Commission will decide in September whether or not to move forward with the plans to build a new airport in the Inner Thames Estuary.

Check out the three design ideas below:

JetBlue

A JetBlue pilot was arrested in Boston on Sunday for alleged heroin possession during a police investigation into drug dealing near Boston Common, The Boston Globe reports.

Officers were watching an area of Boylston Street where they believed drug deals were going on, and they spotted 42-year-old John Manwaring, who told police he is a pilot for JetBlue and just arrived in the city. He is from Maitland, Florida.

Manwaring was temporarily "removed from duty" when JetBlue learned of the arrest, but the airline would not tell the Globe when he was last in the cockpit of a JetBlue plane or whether he was scheduled to fly a plane on Monday.

The company released this statement to the newspaper: "All pilots are drug tested; all crewmembers must receive a negative drug test before they are offered employment with JetBlue and we adhere to the FAA approved random drug and alcohol testing program."

A 31-year-old woman who was with Manwaring was also arrested.

Manwaring has pleaded not guilty to the charge.
