The pilot of an Alitalia jet reported spotting what he described as a drone on Monday afternoon, as he approached New York's JFK airport for landing.

"We saw a drone, a drone aircraft," he said to controllers, according to CNN.

Per his report, the unidentified aircraft was 1,500 feet above the ground, about four miles west of the airport, putting it above Brooklyn.

The drone was not close enough to the to cause any problems and the Alitalia jet landed safely, the New York Times reported.

The Federal Aviation Administration is now investigating the incident, according to a statement sent to CNN.

The FBI New York Field Office’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is also investigating the report, according to ABC.

The idea of solely electric powered vehicles is only now beginning to gain ground within the automotive community, but an electric powered plane seems ages away. And yet, two Swiss pilots and innovators, have created a solar-powered plane that can fly through the day and the night, potentially, never needing to stop.

Solar Impulse is dream turned reality. A unique flying machine somewhere between a sail plane and a traditional airplane that runs off the energy of the sun.

Co-founders, Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg set out in 2003 to see if it was even possible to build a solar powered airplane. Less than 10 years later in 2010, the first Solar Impulse plane, HB-SIA made it first flights.

On July 7, 2010, André Borschberg flew the HB-SIA for 26 hours, 10 minutes and 19 seconds, making it the first solar-powered airplane to fly through the night.

Now in 2013, the company prepares for a new challenge, a Continental flight across the US from West to East.

We recently spoke with Piccard and Borschberg about the development of the solar airplane and its future as well as the innovative technologies being used to power the plane.

The TSA Is Letting Knives And Baseball Bats Back On Airplanes

TSA Airport Security

The U.S. Transportation Security Administration will allow small pocket knives, golf clubs, and hockey sticks back onto passenger planes for the first time since the 9/11 attacks, according to a report from Bloomberg.

At an aviation security conference, TSA administrator John Pistole said the change is to conform with international rules, and stressed the usage of intelligence and "risk-based" security.

"Frankly, I don't want TSA agents to be delayed by these," Pistole said.

The agency will permit knives with retractable blades shorter than 6 centimeters (2.4 inches) and narrower than 1/2 inch at the widest point. The TSA will also grant new exceptions to its ban on baseball and softball bats, allowing passengers to board with souvenir bats less than 24 inches long and lightweight plastic bats even if they’re more than 2 feet long.

But the changes, set to go into effect on April 25, are not without controversy.

The President of Southwest Airlines' Flight Attendants Union, TWU Local 556, came out strongly against the move in a statement to Fox News.

"While we agree that a passenger wielding a small knife or swinging a golf club or hockey stick poses less of a threat to the pilot locked in the cockpit, these are real threats to passengers and flight attendants in the passenger cabin," said Stacy K. Martin

Box cutters, like those used by the Sept. 11 terrorists, and razor blades will still be banned.

The TSA released these graphics explaining what was deemed safe for air travel, and what was not:

This Tense Video Shows Why Israel Now Has 'Arab Only' Buses

$

Over the weekend Israel's Transportation Ministry introduced two bus lines for Palestinian passengers traveling between the West Bank and central Israel, sparking claims of segregation.

The move came amid complaints from Israeli settlers of the occupied territories, many of whomregard Palestinian passengers as an inconvenience or a security risk.

"Obviously, everyone will start screaming 'apartheid' and 'racism' now," one bus driver told YNet. "This really doesn’t feel right, and maybe (the ministry) should find a different solution, but the situation right now is impossible."

Robert Mackey of the New York Times cited this video of one bus driver refusing a Palestinian man a ride to the West Bank in October. Apparently this situation is common, and it's extremely tense.

Dror Moreh, the Israeli director fo the Oscar-nominated documentary "The Gatekeepers," recently explained to Vice why settler complaints carry so much weight:

"The most powerful, the most influential, the most dramatically policy-changing group in Israel are the settlers. They have the biggest lobby in the Israeli political arena. They basically almost control Israel, and critics of that group are getting smaller and smaller… It’s a pity because, as we say, they’ve 'wagged the dog' since 1974, the start of the settler movement."

Ministry officials have been insisting that it "is not authorized to prevent any passenger from using public transport services," but in practice Palestinians are still being told that they're "not allowed on public transportation” — suggesting that the situation goes beyond rules of law.

Ferrari's New Flagship Supercar Is A Beautiful Hybrid With A Dumb Name

$

0

ferrari laferrari red small size

You are looking at the first images of Ferrari’s new flagship supercar, the LaFerrari, Italian for “TheFerrari.”

Code named the F150, the car that replaces the Enzo at the top of the Ferrari hierarchy made its debut today at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, easily stealing the limelight from all other debuts.

We can confirm that its powertrain is a hybrid setup that pairs Ferrari’s 6.3-liter V-12 engine and seven-speed dual-clutch 'box with its HY-KERS hybrid setup to boost output and lower emissions.

The system consists of two electric motors, one mounted to the gearbox and sending drive to the rear wheels and the other used to take some of the load off the engine by powering auxiliary devices.

Peak output of the combined system is a staggering 963 horsepower, as measured in metric figures. In good ol’ American numbers that’s still 950 horsepower to play with. Torque comes in at more than 660 pound-feet, with the final figure not yet confirmed.

Ferrari hasn’t given final performance numbers just yet, but says the LaFerrari will reach 60 mph in under 3.0 seconds and reach a top speed in excess of 217 mph (expected to be 230 mph). The car’s closest rival, the McLaren P1, which also debuts in Geneva, has similar specs but has its top speed limited to 217 mph. Another area were the LaFerrari is said to outmatch the P1 is in the 0-186 mph sprint, which the Ferrari should do in 15 seconds versus the McLaren’s quoted 17 seconds

Fiorano lap in less than 1:20

Ferrari boasts a lap time of its Fiorano test track of less than 1:20, which is 5.0 seconds quicker than the Enzo and 3.0 seconds quicker than the F12 Berlinetta.

The LaFerrari follows in a long line of ‘special series’ cars from the famous Italian sports car manufacturer. From the GTO of the 1980s right up to the Enzo supercar launched last decade, Ferrari’s special series cars have always been heavy hitters and some of the best examples of the transfer of technology from Formula One to the road.

n the case of the latest car, two of the headline technologies is the new hybrid system, Ferrari’s first on one of its production cars, and a new carbon fiber monocoque developed by Ferrari’s F1 technical director Rory Byrne. According to Ferrari, the central structure displays 27 percent more torsional rigidity and 22 percent more beam stiffness than the Enzo’s already stiff core.

The structure features no less than four different types of carbon fiber, all hand-laminated and autoclave-cured in the racing department using the same design and production methods as the F1 car. This helped optimize the design: various functions were integrated (e.g. seats and battery compartment) into the chassis. The final curb weight, not confirmed yet, is expected to be around 2,800 pounds.

ferrari laferrari red small sizeNumerous benefits of hybrid tech

Purists may dislike the thought that Ferrari’s latest and greatest supercar is a hybrid, but the beauty of the system is that it not only cuts fuel consumption but it also allows for precise torque vectoring, traction control and brake force distribution. Ferrari claims a 10 percent reduction in the 0-124 mph sprint, along with a 40 percent reduction in emissions compared to a non-hybrid solution.

The hybrid also helps achieve those impressive power figures. While the car’s 6.3-liter V-12, a variation of the unit from the F12 Berlinetta and FF, is a masterpiece on its own, its peak output only reaches 789 horsepower--despite revving to 9,250 rpm. The main electric motor helps lift that to the 950 horsepower figure that will ensure the LaFerrari is the fastest road car to ever emerge from the Ferrari factory in Maranello.

Powering the electrical system is a lithium-ion battery that’s sourced from Samsung and weighs just over 130 pounds by itself. The batteries are charged in different ways: under braking (even hard braking with the ABS active) and every time the V-12 produces more torque than required, such as in cornering. In the latter instance, rather than being sent to the wheels, the excess torque is converted to energy and stored in the batteries.

Active aerodynamics constantly at work

Another marvel is the car’s active aerodynamics. The engineers’ aim was to deliver the highest degree of aerodynamic efficiency ever achieved with any road car, with a coefficient of drag of nearly 3.0, thanks to technical solutions honed with CFD analysis and fine-tuned in the F1 wind tunnel.

To boost efficiency, the LaFerrari sports active aerodynamic devices front (diffusers and guide vane on the underbody) and rear (diffusers and rear spoiler) which generate downforce when needed without compromising the car’s overall drag coefficient. These devices deploy automatically on the basis of a number of different performance parameters which are monitored in real time by the car’s dynamic vehicle controls.

One further innovative aspect of the LaFerrari is the integration of its active aerodynamics and hybrid system with the other dynamic control systems aboard. Proprietary algorithms deliver optimal integration of all the various systems, automatically and often without the driver even noticing. In cornering, for instance, the HY-KERS keeps the V12’s revs high to guarantee better acceleration on exit.

The brakes are from Brembo and are composed of a special carbon-ceramic material. They are housed within 19-inch wheels up front and 20-inch wheels at the rear. The tires are Pirelli P Zeros that measure up to 345/30 at the rear. Also aiding the handling are magnetorheological-type dampers, an electronic differential and Ferrari’s F1-Trac stability and traction control.

ferrari laferrari red small sizeProduction run of only 499 cars

A very advanced and uncompromising approach was also taken for the interior, which features an interface inspired by F1 single-seaters. The seat is fixed and tailored to the driver while both the pedal box and steering wheel are adjustable. The driving position is similar to that of a single-seater and was designed after consultation with the Scuderia Ferrari drivers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa, who played an active role throughout the entire development process.

Only 499 examples of the LaFerrari are scheduled to be produced, and all are almost certainly accounted for.

stephan winkelman with lamborghini veneno at geneva motor show

The Geneva Motor Show opened to the press on Tuesday, and while there are clear signs of the disastrous state of the European auto market, there's plenty of glitz and glamour on display as well.

That's because European luxury car sales have not suffered the same plunge as more reasonably priced vehicles, and high-end automakers are reaching out to new groups of wealthy buyers in Russia, China, and the Middle East.

Among the dozens of car debuts, new offerings from the likes of Lamborghini, Ferrari, Rolls-Royce, and Aston Martin stood out.

These eight brand new cars represent the essence of the supercar market: They are incredibly powerful, incredibly luxurious, and incredibly expensive. And they're all beautiful.

The new Porsche 911 GT3 has a top speed of 196 mph and goes from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds.

It is the first Porsche to have active rear-wheel steering.

The interior is made to look like a true sports car, with leather seats, of course. Price tag: $130,400.

9 Ways Business Travelers Can Score Upgrades On The Fly

$
0
0

reddit upgradeThese days, anyone with enough cash can buy their way into frequent flyer clubs, and points gurus are constantly broadcasting the secrets to gaming the rewards card system.

This is not a trend we should be thrilled about.

"It's getting harder and harder to get all of these perks because there are so many 'elite' travelers," said George Horbica, founder of discount airfare site Airfarewatchdog.com.

For business travelers who are constantly passing from one cramped flight and hotel room to the next, the competition is especially fierce.

We've reached out to a few travel experts for their tips on the easiest ways you can still score travel upgrades.

Get upgrades on flights by booking an economy ticket with a Y or B booking code. According to TravelNerd.com's Amy Lee, this special booking code is gold for fliers looking for an upgrade. "This means that the ticket will be full fare but you will receive a complimentary upgrade if there are open spots in the next class of service," Lee said. Just request the upgrade when you book your ticket and then check your status 24 hours before your flight. Frequent flyers should hear about upgrades within 100 hours of their departure (based on status level).

Give up your seat on a flight and kill them with kindness. When it comes to scoring upgrades, good manners could give you an edge over other grumpy flyers. "Once I volunteered to get bumped from a flight so a family could travel together," Lee said. "Not only did I receive a $500 flight voucher, but the gate agent upgraded me on the next flight. She did this because no one else would give up their seat and she realized that although I was inconvenienced, I was willing to help the traveling family."

Dress nicely to give yourself an edge. "When flights are oversold [in economy class], sometimes gate agents will pick people to upgrade based on whether they're dressed well, or if they were nice to someone when they checked in," Horbica said. Get ahead of the game by kindly telling the gate agent in advance that you hope they'll consider you if any upgrades are available. "They'd much rather sell you an upgrade for $100 or $200 rather than give it away to a frequent flier," he said.

Double up on rewards cards to reap more benefits. Lee clued us into the latest favorite travel hack out there. Since American Airlines and US Airways recently announced their merger, some travelers have signed up for both airlines' signature rewards cards (US Airways Premier World MasterCard and the Citi Select/AAdvantage American Express). With both of their signup bonus miles combined, travelers will be armed with as many as 70,000 miles that can be used together once the merger is complete.

Rent a car at the end of the day. "By the end of the day, all the standard and compact vehicles have been rented out and you are more likely to receive a complimentary upgrade [to something more luxurious]," Lee said.

And if rental agencies won't upgrade for free, try negotiating."Premium cars can cost an arm and a leg, but counter reps will negotiate much lower prices if they are available when you pick up your car," says Brian Kelly of ThePointsGuy.com. "Ask at check-in if you can upgrade to a higher category, and if they quote you a price, be sure to negotiate since they won’t start at their best price ... Being super nice also helps."

Save up your bonus miles to score upgrades on the cheap. A number of airlines are selling miles with a big bonus attached (say, a purchase of 50,000 miles buys you an extra 50,000 miles at no cost). "Those miles can be used for upgrades from the lowest possible fare, and that's another thing to look for, especially if you're flying first class," Horbica said. "For example, you can upgrade the cheapest possible fare from New York To LA for about 17,000 miles right now."

Ask for hotel upgrades when the front desk isn't busy. Front desk clerks are known to be willing to upgrade customers when business is slow, but you're best bet is to ask them when there aren't a load of other people around. "I just did this," Horbica said. "I had been booked in a room near the elevator. I told them I was a light sleeper and asked for a room at the end of the hallway. The nice person behind the desk upgraded me to a better room at no charge." Horbica typically follows this script: "I know the hotel is not full today. Do you think you could upgrade me to a suite?"

And Clement Carey, General Manager of The Kitano New York, says specifying room features is a nice gateway to a larger room. "Requesting a high floor or a specific view can garner an unexpected upgrade, if standard rooms with those features are sold out.  A reservation for a premium room type or package is more likely to get upgraded to a suite when occupancy is high. A discounted room rate is less apt to get an upgrade."

Don't shy away from airfare consolidators. Horbica recently helped a friend score a $6,000 business class ticket to London on Virgin Atlantic for $2,500. He did it by booking through an airfare consolidator site (Horbica likes http://planetamex.com/), which carry discounted first and business class international fares.

Airport Wait Times Have Nearly Doubled Since The Sequester

airport security line

Security lines at airports have nearly doubled in length since the beginning of the sequestration Friday night, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano said on Monday.

Speaking at a POLITICO Playbook breakfast, Napolitano said the imposed cuts are already having an impact on the Transportation Security Administration:

Now that we are having to reduce or eliminate basically overtime both for TSA and for customs, now that we have instituted a hiring freeze…we will begin today sending out furlough notices. We are already seeing the effects.

Lines are “150 to 200 percent as long as we would normally expect,” she added.

Cuts to the tune of $600 million in expenditures to the Federal Aviation Administration's budget will impact air travel as well.

On February 22, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and FAA Administrator Michael Huerta laid out plans to reduce equipment maintenance, furlough 47,000 employees, and close some air traffic control towers.

All that, they said, could lead to 90-minute delays during peak hours at large airports.

New York City Is Shaming Teen Moms On The Subway

New York City government's Human Resources Administration (HRA) just plastered a series of confrontational anti-teen pregnancy posters around city subways that is sparking a debate: Do the ads inappropriately shame teen moms, or are they a necessary serving of tough medicine?

(There's also a ridiculous text message-based game component that we've posted photos of below.)

The ads show crying children condemning their mothers. Text reads, "Honestly Mom... chances are he won't stay with you. What happens to me?" and "I'm twice as likely not to graduate high school because you had me as a teen."teen mom nyc ad subway

The other two ads target more than just the mother:teen mom subway ad nyc

"This campaign makes very clear to young people that there's a lot at stake when it comes to deciding to raise a child,"Mayor Bloomberg said.

An opinion piece in the New York Daily News defends the campaign: "The ads are not racist or sexist, or about shaming. They are about alerting young women to the fallout of single motherhood. Half of teens never think about what an unplanned pregnancy would do. The more who wise up, the better."

But many others disagree, calling out the ads as an attempt to shame young mothers who chose to keep their children after an unplanned pregnancy without offering real resources for teen moms. There are also complaints that the ads appear racially charged since most of the babies look as though they're minorities.

On the blog The Push Back, former teen mom Natasha Vianna noted that these ads in no way prevent accidental pregnancies but rather make an already difficult situation even harder. She writes, "It’s this very concept of shaming teen moms that drives us into a deeper hole of isolation. I didn’t want to tell anyone that I was a teen mom, I didn’t want to ask for help, I refused to apply for any aid, and I put myself in unhealthy situations so I wouldn’t have to face the judgment of others. It was horrible."

Laura Beck at Jezebel writes, "What's the plan here? Just making everyone feel bad? Where's the mention of education and assistance?"

Although there was one surprising and bizarre "educational" component to the campaign.

At the bottom of each ad, there's a prompt to text 877-877 to learn more. When users text the number, they are launched into a choose-your-own-adventure text based game in which you assume the role of either Anaya or Louis, teen parents.

The first prompt is as follows:

teen mom hra ad nyc

So if she goes to prom, Anaya is immediately socially isolated and deemed a fat loser by the people she is closest too.

The other alternative wasn't much better. If Anaya stays home, she gets in a massive fight with her parents. Again indicating that teen moms will be rejected by those who they count on most.

teen mom mobile hra nyc ad

Other portions of the game are equally dire. Anaya must drop out of school, she is abandoned by Louis, and her mother cries when she sees her working her second job as a waitress to pay for her baby's clothes.

Louis' path almost entirely revolves around money, his inability to go to "the Garden" with his "boys." If he chooses to continue hanging out with his boys and watching Knicks games he gets his "drivers license suspended for not paying child support! Now he has to apply for a work-only permit just to get to his job & school."

Bloomberg was also criticized for NYC's hard-line approach to anti-obesity marketing campaigns.

Kia's New Concept Car Made Some British Politicians Really Angry

kia provo concept car

The Korean carmaker, Kia, has run into trouble by calling its latest concept car the Provo, triggering fury from two Democratic Unionist MPs.

Gregory Campbell (East Londonderry) and William McCrea (South Antrim) claimed the name had caused "deep offence", saying the car should be renamed with a title which was "not associated with terror and mayhem".

In a Commons motion the MPs said: "This name has caused deep offence given that the Provisional IRA were known as the Provos when they were murdering and bombing in Northern Ireland, the rest of the UK, as well as in Germany, where the name is supposed to have been chosen."

The row came as a surprise to Kia who unveiled the model at the Geneva Motor Show.

The Provo, the company said in its publicity blurb was a "sleek, low, yet muscular coupe-style" which was "meant to be cheeky and cheerful in its compactness and to hint at the fun awaiting on the open road".

Kia was swift to reassure the MPs that the car will not be called the Provo when it goes into the showroom. In fact the name, chosen by the Italian designer, was adapted from prova - meaning try in his native language.

“We regret any unnecessary offence that might have been caused by the name,” a spokesman said. “It was supposed to denote performance, emotion and fun.”

Kia is hardly the first carmaker to drop a cultural clanger when naming its cars. The Chevrolet Nova fared badly in Spain, perhaps because it meant “does not go”, which was not the unique selling point the company might have wished.

Mazda, the Japanese manufacturer, should perhaps have thought twice when launching a car called Laputa in Spain, given that the title meant prostitute.

Even Rolls Royce has erred. The Silver Shadow should have been called the Silver Mist until somebody pointed out that German motorists were unlikely to go for a model called “manure”

Tesla Loses Its Legal Challenge Over A BBC Review Dissing The Roadster

tesla roadster fast tbi

LONDON (Reuters) - Tesla Motors Inc. lost a legal challenge in Britain on Tuesday against BBC television's Top Gear motoring program, which had questioned the range claimed by the manufacturer for its electric Roadster sports car.

California-based Tesla was seeking to overturn an earlier dismissal of its claim for libel and damages against the show, arguing it had lost sales in Britain as a result of the report.

In a December 2008 program, Top Gear said the two-seat Roadster fell short of its advertised range on a single charge.

Tesla argued the comments were defamatory because it had "intentionally or recklessly grossly misled potential purchasers."

Appeal Court Judge Martin Moore-Bick disagreed, saying the comments did not libel Tesla.

He said viewers would recognize that Top Gear's high-speed track testing was quite different to a normal driving style.

"It would be obvious to a reasonable viewer ... that the range derived from track testing was not in any meaningful sense the car's 'true range'," he said.

He also dismissed Tesla's claim for lost sales, saying it was "quite unrealistic" to argue that its failure to sell an additional 200 vehicles in the UK was entirely due to the show's unfavourable review.

Tesla did not immediately reply to requests for comment on the decision.

The ruling came after Tesla said it had lost about $100 million in sales and canceled orders due a story in the New York Times about a different vehicle model.

Tesla said in February it expects to record its first profit in the first quarter of 2013, after posting a net loss of $89.9 million in the fourth quarter.

Scientists Think They Have Found The Mythical 'Sunstone' Vikings Used To Navigate Warships

$

viking ship

An oblong crystal found in the wreck of a 16th-century English warship is a sunstone, a near-mythical navigational aid said to have been used by Viking mariners, researchers said on Wednesday.

The stone is made of Iceland spar, a transparent, naturally-occurring calcite crystal that polarizes light and can get a bearing on the Sun, they said.

It was found in the remains of a ship that had been dispatched to France in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I as a precaution against a second Spanish Armada but foundered off the island of Alderney, in the Channel.

British and French scientists have long argued that the find is a sunstone -- a device that fractures the light, enabling seafarers to locate the Sun even when it is behind clouds or has dipped below the horizon.

Sunstones, according to a theory first aired 45 years ago, helped the great Norse mariners to navigate their way to Iceland and even perhaps as far as North America during the Viking heyday of 900-1200 AD, way before the magnetic compass was introduced in Europe in the 13th century.

But there is only a sketchy reference in ancient Norse literature to a "solarsteinn," which means the idea has remained frustratingly without solid proof.

In a study published in the British journal Proceedings of the Royal Society A, investigators carried out a chemical analysis on a tiny sample, using a device called a spectrometer, which confirmed that the stone was a calcite.

The stone is about the size of a small bar of soap whose edges have been trimmed at an angle. In technical terms, its shape is rhombohedral.

It is milky white in appearance, and not transparent, but the new experiments show that this is surface discolouration, caused by centuries of immersion in sea water and abrasion by sand, the study said.

Using a transparent crystal similar to the original, the scientists were able to follow the track of the setting Sun in poor light, with an accuracy of one degree. In a second experiment, they were able to locate the Sun for 40 minutes after sunset.

Other factors provide evidence that this is a sunstone, according to the investigation, led by Guy Ropars of the University of Rennes, in France's western region of Brittany.

The crystal was found in the wreckage alongside a pair of navigation dividers. And tests that placed a magnetic compass next to one of the iron cannons excavated from the ship found that the needle swung wildly, by as much as 100 degrees.

Put together, these suggest the sunstone may have been kept as a backup to a magnetic compass.

"Although easy to use, the magnetic compass was not always reliable in the 16th century, as most of the magnetic phenomena were not understood," says the study.

"As the magnetic compass on a ship can be perturbed for various reasons, the optical compass giving an absolute reference may be used when the Sun is hidden."

The authors also note previous research that some species of migrating birds appear to have used polarized light from the sky as a navigational aid or to recalibrate their magnetic compass around sunrise and sunset.

How does the sunstone work?

If you put a dot on top of the crystal and look at it from below, two dots appear, because the light is "depolarised" and fractured along different axes.

You then rotate the crystal until the two points have exactly the same intensity or darkness.

"At that angle, the upward-facing surface of the crystal indicates the direction of the Sun," Ropars told AFP in an interview in 2011, when preliminary research about the Alderney stone was published.

The production version is scheduled to roll off the line in early 2014, with a price tag in the $125,000-$150,000 range.

It's a good looking car, with some nice features, notably its V-shaped radiator grille mesh and an interior reminiscent of an airplane cockpit.

But the feature that truly stands out is the exposed gear shifter, which the Dutch automaker says is "inspired by early aircraft controls" from its aviation heritage.

What makes the beautiful hunk of metal so great is the different approach Spyker has taken, compared to other automakers in recent years.

Because gear shifting in 21st century cars is controlled electronically, there's no real need for actual levers any more. Land Rover has supplanted the traditional shifter with a knob in the 2013 Range Rover. Lincoln has gone with gear selection via buttons in the new MKZ.

For most buyers, it's a change that makes little difference.

But for those who want the visceral feeling of punching a car into gear, even in an automatic, the B6 offers a wonderful way to do it:

In contrast, here's how to change gears in the new Range Rover:

Another Video Of Chinese Official's Epic Airport Meltdown Has Emerged, And It's Even Better Than The First One

Last month remarkable CCTV footage of a Chinese official's complete meltdown at an airport hit the internet, going global in just a few days.

Another video of the incident, apparently filmed by a fellow passenger, has appeared on the Language Log blog, and it is even more entertaining than the first video.

Crucially, this video has sound, and Victor Mair of the Language Logs blog has translated:

"I originally booked a first class [ticket]…. What do you mean, huh?! What do you mean, huh?! I originally booked a first class [ticket]…. You're really bullying me…. And not just once?! You're really taking advantage of me. Hai! Hurry up and open the door!… Hai, how can you be like this? Really browbeating me!… First class…."

The context seems to confirm earlier reports that the irate passenger had already missed one flight, and missed a second after he and his wife went to get breakfast.

Yan Linkun, a member of China's top level government advisory board CPPCC, has since been apologized for the incident and has been suspended from his job.

You Must Be Young, Smart, And Gorgeous To Be A Flight Attendant On Thailand's Budget Airline

It takes a special sort of person to be a flight attendant. In the early days of airplane travel, flight attendants were a cross between nurses and bellboys, then the jet era called for them to be glamorous representatives of the airline.

Today, flight attendants are recognized as service professionals who often undertake a full career in the skies.

Thailand's budget airline Nok Air is still seemingly stuck in that early jet age mindset, however, as they've just launched a recruitment drive via Facebook, with requirements that read more like Barbie's resume than a job posting.

Some of the strict requirements:

  • Females, "age not over 25 (at the time of application)"

  • No shorter than 160 cm (about 5'2")

  • Weight proportionate to height

  • "Excellent communication skills" in English and Thai (and a TOEIC score to prove it). A third language would be an advantage, preferably Mandarin Chinese

  • Minimum education is a Bachelor's degree

  • You must supply photos of yourself in both formal and casual dress

Note that all of this comes mere weeks after their nearly nude calendar scandal.

Having flown on Nok, we can vouch for the fact that the airline is receiving exactly those whom they seek. Our Nok attendants were young, slim, sociable, and ready with both a snack and a smile. Are they having fun? Flying to the paradise of Phuket sure seems like fun. Will they be doing this forever? Definitely not. When an airline recruits in this way, they've already got an expiration date in mind for the crop of new recruits.

The New Rolls-Royce Uses GPS To See The Future And 'Pre-Change' Gears

rolls-royce wraith

At the Geneva Motor Show on Tuesday, Rolls-Royce finally unveiled the brand new Wraith, a low-slung, sleek coupe built for speed as well as luxury.

The most powerful Rolls ever, the Wraith is equipped with a V-12 engine, coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

And to make sure the car is always performing as well as possible, Rolls-Royce engineers created "Satellite Aided Transmission" (SAT).

Using GPS, the car figures out what upcoming stretches of road look like, and pre-shifts accordingly. Sudden, jarring downshifting is a thing of the past, and the drive through a sharp turn or a roundabout is smoother than ever before.

SAT is just the latest in a slew of remarkable advances in automatic transmission technology that likely are the death knell of manual shifting, at least in the United States (where only 3.9 percent of cars sold in 2011 were manuals).

That's a sad thing for old-school driving enthusiasts. But it's good news for the future of cars, which are getting incredibly smart and ever more efficient.

With technology like this, it's a short hop to a future where machines play chauffeur, and humans stick to being passengers.

Watch Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös review the Wraith's various features, including SAT:

On Tuesday a routine stop led to the theft of two cop cars and two high speed chases in Camden, New Jersey, and nearby Philadelphia.

A young couple is accused of jumping into an Camden officer's car while the cop made a traffic stop, breaking the cop's leg while driving away, reaching 100 mph as police chased them into Philadelphia, and crashing the car in North Philly.

That 10-minute chase led to another high speed chase when the 23-year-old female allegedly fled and stole a Philadelphia Police car while officers were apprehending her 24-year-old companion.

Philadelphia Deputy Police Commissioner Richard Ross told NBC10 that he's "never heard of anyone stealing two police cars in one incident."

Danny McQuade of The Philly Post made a montage of gifs of the second chase, and they're wild:

The charges from the incidents will include resisting arrest, DUI, fleeing police, risking a catastrophe, aggravated assault, and theft.

NBC reports that the young man's grandmother reported the couple missing earlier in the day after they allegedly took the woman's car and left her with the couple's 7-month-old child.

Below is a highlight reel of the 8-minute chase along with play-by-play from Fox 29's Jeff Cole:

Investigators Still Don't Know What's Wrong With The Dreamliner's Batteries

NTSB boeing dreamliner investigation battery

NEW YORK, March 5 (Reuters) - Boeing said this week it can move "really fast" to get its 787 Dreamliner back into the skies once regulators approve a fix for burning batteries on board the plane.

Regulators may not move so quickly.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, which grounded Boeing's high-tech jet nearly seven weeks ago, faces unusually tough obstacles in approving it for flight - one of them brought on by the agency's own boss.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood set an impossible standard early in the crisis by promising that the Dreamliner won't return to the skies until regulators are "1,000 percent sure" of its safety.

Because no aircraft is 100 percent safe, "it is going to be a challenge for the FAA to dial back from some of the overheated rhetoric," said Richard Aboulafia, an aerospace analyst at the Teal Group in Virginia.

Boeing Co's flagship jetliner has been grounded for nearly seven weeks, costing an estimated $350 million, after lithium ion batteries overheated on two 787s in January.

The National Transportation Safety Board this week is due to issue an update on its investigation into what caused the battery to overheat and smoke but has indicated it will take longer to get to the bottom of what went wrong.

Boeing proposed a fix two weeks ago, but safety experts said approval from the FAA will be difficult as long as what caused the batteries to melt down remains a mystery.

Even if the battery failures are fully explained, safety experts said, that does not make the Dreamliner "1,000 percent safe." Plane makers and the FAA always aim to reduce risk to levels that may approach zero but never reach it.

"Nothing is 100 percent safe," said John Goglia, a former NTSB board member with 40 years of experience in the industry.

In addition, the National Transportation Safety Board has questioned the process the FAA and Boeing used to approve the plane as safe just 18 months ago.

"The FAA will need to find a way to communicate that they believe the level of risk has been reduced to a minute level that's acceptable," Aboulafia said.

The FAA declined to answer detailed questions for this story and reiterated that it is analyzing Boeing's proposal closely. "The safety of the flying public is our top priority and we won't allow the 787 to return to commercial service until we're confident that any proposed solution has addressed the battery failure risks," agency representative Laura Brown said.

Boeing also declined to comment. But at an investor conference on Monday, Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Ray Conner said the company is confident of its proposal. "We feel very good about the fix," he said. "We've covered the waterfront."

COSTLY GROUNDING

The FAA faces strong commercial pressure to return the plane to flight. Boeing is the nation's largest exporter, employing nearly 85,000 people in its airplane division. The company is still producing planes, but it cannot deliver them or receive payment until a worldwide grounding by regulators is lifted.

Airlines are losing money by parking the planes and must lease jets or make other arrangements to fly passengers on flights scheduled months in advance.

Goglia, the former NTSB board member, said regulators are "going to have to find a way to balance off their caution with the country's and Boeing's need to get this airplane back in the air."

Having certified the high-tech plane as safe, the FAA is facing very close scrutiny of its approval procedures. The NTSB has questioned the process Boeing and the FAA used to certify the plane.

Without these pressures the FAA might have approved Boeing's fix in a couple of weeks and had the jet flying in another month or two, said Hans Weber, a consultant who has served as an adviser to the FAA for more than 20 years.

"Now, with the other considerations, I don't even want to venture a guess," said Weber, president of TECOP International, in San Diego.

Aboulafia estimated that it would take at least four months for the 787 to get cleared to fly if the FAA approves flight tests soon, as Boeing requested. If flight testing takes longer, it could take six to nine months before the 787 is back in the sky.

BOEING's SUPERBOX

Some safety experts see the FAA eager to stand by Boeing and move quickly - even if politics slows it down some. The agency has a well-established process for vetting plane changes and has called in numerous experts to advise it on lithium-ion technology.

Former Department of Transportation Inspector General Mary Schiavo said the FAA is likely to decide that the fix is "an acceptable risk before the NTSB will."

The aviation industry, for its part, has strong incentives to avoid cutting corners, since human life, company reputations and careers are at stake.

"We put our own children on those planes," said Tom McCarty, president of SPEEA, the engineering union at Boeing.

Boeing, meanwhile, has swiftly made design changes, which include adding ceramic insulation between the cells of the battery and a stronger stainless steel box with a venting tube to contain a fire and expel fumes from the aircraft.

At the investor conference on Monday, Boeing's Conner said the company will double 787 production this year and deliver the same number of jets it planned before the battery crisis struck.

Industry experts, however, say the inability to pinpoint the cause of the battery failures could make the FAA's job of certifying a solution more difficult, since it requires a fix that can contain the worst problem that can occur without damaging the aircraft.

"People will attack this approach," said Weber. "They'll say, 'How do you know that's the worst case?'"

Weber speculated that the safety concerns may result in regulators restricting the 787's ability to make long flights over water, a standard known as ETOPS. Such a change would be a severe blow to Boeing and airlines that use the Dreamliner for long-haul direct flights with about 250 passengers, a highly lucrative market that the 787 can serve at 20 percent lower fuel cost than other planes.

"If politically they feel they cannot move aggressively toward restoring three-hour ETOPS they may restrict it to one hour, so the aircraft can land if there is a fire," said Weber. "That destroys the business case for the 787."

Boeing shares were up $1.49, or nearly 2 percent, at $78.58 in late afternoon trading on Tuesday.
